Cardinals win two events, earn seven NCAA “B” cuts
DALLAS, Texas - The No. 21 University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team earned seven NCAA "B" cuts during day one of the SMU Classic at the Robson & Lindley Aquatic Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium. After the first day of competition, the Cardinals sit in second place with 167 points behind No. 13 Auburn (171).
The Cardinals opened the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay as the team of Ashlyn Schoof (53.78), Mariia Astashkina (1:00.14), Grace Oglesby (51.45), and Lainey Visscher (48.78) combined to win in 3:34.15.
Maria Sumida cruised to second in the championship final of the 400 individual medley in a time of 4:11.83, the second fastest time in the nation this season and an NCAA "B' standard. Sophie Cattermole won the consolation heat, besting the field by five seconds to post an NCAA "B" cut in 4:13.74. Northwestern's Calypso Sheridan won the event in 4:05.33 for a new meet record.
Arina Openysheva stopped the clock in 1:46.58 to take second in the championship heat of the 200 freestyle behind winner Abbey Webb (1:46.37) of Auburn. Diana Dunn powered home in 1:46.94 to finish second in the B-final as both Cardinals achieved the NCAA "B" standard.
Openysheva was soon back in the water to earn her second silver of the night in the 50 freestyle, sprinting to the wall in 22.84. Lainey Visscher raced to second in 22.63 while swimming in the consolation final to earn an NCAA 'B' standard. Auburn's Claire Fisch took the top spot in the event with a time of 22.41.
Molly Fears dove to third on the 1-meter board after posting a final score of 265.75 behind winner Alison Maillard (279.50) of Auburn and runner-up Nicole Stambo (267.60) of Southern Methodist.
Grace Oglesby flew to the top of the podium in the 100 butterfly, winning the event in 51.62 for the second-fastest time in the country this year and an NCAA "B" standard. Sumida raced to third in the consolation heat of the event in 55.35.
Schoof finished second in the championship heat of the 100 backstroke with a time of 53.97, right behind Auburn's Sonnele Oeztuerk (53.95). It was a tie for first in the B-final as Visscher and Northwestern's Krystal Lara both touched in 54.48. Calypso claimed the event in a winning time of 52.85.
Astashkina secured the runner-up spot in the A-final of the 100 breaststroke, getting her hands to the wall in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:00.62. Oglesby took third in the B-final with a time of 1:02.59 while the event went to Northwestern's Hannah Brunzell in 1:00.06.
The 800 freestyle relay team of Cattermole (1:48.33), Oprnysheva (54.71), Sumida (1:47.90), and Dunn (1:47.92) concluded the first day of competition by finishing second in 7:11.28 behind Auburn (7:08.89).
The Cardinals dive back in for the final day of the SMU Classic tomorrow at 12 p.m. EST.
