
Women Head to SMU Classic For Two-Day Meet

Unique format will showcase Cardinals' versatility
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Eight members of the University of Louisville's women's swimming and diving team will head to the Lone Star state to compete at the SMU Classic on Oct. 11-12. Start time is set for 6:30 p.m. CDT on Friday and 11 a.m. CDT on Saturday at the Robson & Lindley Aquatic Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium.

The SMU Classic features eight swimmers and one diver from each participating team. Swimmers are permitted to race in three events per day, one of which must be a relay. Each team will enter one swimmer per heat (Consolation and Championship), while relays will only have a Championship heat. Diving events will consist of six optional dives on 1-meter and 3-meter boards.

About the Cardinals
Louisville is fresh off a successful season opener on Oct. 4 where they won all 16 events to defeat Xavier 194-62, marking the third-straight year the Cardinals have won their home opener. Marida Sumida was a triple-event winner for the Cardinals after earning victories in the 1000 freestyle, 200 backstroke, and 200 individual medley.

Last year, the women's team recorded their highest finish in program history with a fourth-place showing at the 2019 NCAA Championships. Their score of 235 points was the most points scored by a Cardinal team at NCAAs in history. Louisville also secured third place at the ACC Championships.

SMU Classic
Mariia Astashkina, Sophie Cattermole, Diana Dunn, Molly Fears, Grace Oglesby, Arina Openysheva, Ashlyn Schoof, and Sumida have been selected to represent Louisville at the SMU Classic.

The Cardinals are set to compete against Southern Methodist, Auburn, Iowa, Northwestern, and ACC rival Miami. Out of the six participating teams, the Cardinals recorded the highest showing at the 2019 NCAA Championships.

The Cardinals won the SMU Classic last season, finishing the two-day competition with 358 points to edge out Southern California (312) and Virginia (299). Louisville won 10 out of 18 events and swept all four relays, setting new meet records in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay.

In 2018, Oglesby earned victories in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly while Cattermole secured a win in the 400 individual medley. Astaskina registered a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley as Openysheva raced to second in the 50 freestyle. On the boards, Fears placed fourth on the 1-meter and took fifth on the 3-meter.
