Campbell, Oriente and Stowers drive in two runs each as Cardinals overcome four-run deficit in 8-4 win
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Faced with an early 4-0 deficit, the No. 28 Louisville baseball team scored the final eight runs on Tuesday night, including four in the decisive seventh inning, to register an 8-4 victory over Wright StateĀ at Jim Patterson Stadium.
After the visiting Raiders (31-15) scored two runs in the first and two more in the third, the Cardinals (33-15) started their comeback with two-run frames in the fourth and sixth innings before erupting for the four-spot in the seventh. Eight of the nine starters in the Louisville lineup had at least one hit, while Drew Campbell, Danny Oriente and Josh Stowers drove in two runs each in the win. Stowers, Devin Mann, Jake Snider and Logan Wyatt scored two runs each.
Mann was 2-for-5 with a double and Snider finished 2-for-4, while Oriente delivered a two-run double in the big seventh inning. Campbell and Stowers added singles to go with their two runs scored as Louisville registered its 18th comeback win of the season.
On the mound, sophomore righthander Shay Smiddy scattered four hits in three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win and move to 5-1 on the season. Freshman lefthander Reid Detmers established a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed four runs on five hits in a career-long six innings in his fifth start of the season.
Soon after the Cardinals had scored two runs in the sixth inning to pull even, they loaded the bases against Bear Bellomy with one out in the seventh before Stowers coaxed a walk on a 3-2 pitch from Mitch Gremling to send Snider home for the go-ahead run. Oriente followed by doubling down the left line scoring both Mann and Wyatt. Stowers plated the final run of the night on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Campbell.
Wright State opened the scoring on Tuesday with a pair of runs in the first inning. Peyton Burdick connected on a RBI single to right field to plate Matt Morrow for the first run, while JD Orr scored the second run on a RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Gabe Snyder.
The Raiders doubled the lead in the third inning on a two-run homer by Snyder. Following a leadoff single by Burdick, Snyder drove a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left center for his 15th home run of the season and a 4-0 advantage.
The Cardinals cut into the deficit with two runs in the fourth inning. Snider started things with his one-out bunt single and moved to third on a double from Mann before scoring on a RBI groundout by Wyatt. Stowers followed with a RBI single to left field to score Mann.
Louisville evened the score at 4-4 with two runs in the sixth. Wyatt walked, moved to second after Stowers was hit by a pitch and took third on a sacrifice bunt by Oriente before scoring on a RBI sac fly to center by Campbell. A pair of balks by Bellomy advanced Stowers from second to third and then home for the tying run.
Bellomy was charged with the loss and dropped to 2-2 on the season after allowing five runs on three hits in 2.2 innings of relief. At the plate, Snyder finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Burdick was 3-for-5 with one RBI. Orr also had three hits and scored a run.
