Mann reaches base six times and scores five runs; Hoeing twirls five no-hit innings of relief
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Devin Mann homered and scored a career-high five runs while Logan Wyatt had four hits and four RBIs as the No. 28 Louisville baseball team delivered its highest scoring performance since 2010 with Wednesday's 24-6 win over Cincinnati on Cancer Awareness Night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Mann finished 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, three walks and one hit-by-pitch while scoring the most runs by a Louisville player since Adam Duvall scored five times against Ohio State on May 5, 2009. Wyatt was 4-for-6 with four RBIs, one walk and scored once for the Cardinals (34-15), who totaled the most runs in a game for the program since the 24-6 win over Rutgers on May 1, 2010.
On a night when the offense claimed the spotlight, righthander Bryan Hoeing was equally impressive as the junior twirled five innings of no-hit, shutout relief with three strikeouts to claim the victory and move to 6-2 on the season. After the teams scored three runs each in the first inning, Hoeing entered the game in the top of the second and provided a dominant performance out of the bullpen allowing the Cardinals to take command of the game.
Paced by Mann and Wyatt, 13 of the 14 Louisville players with a plate appearance on Wednesday reached base safely and 10 different Cardinals had at least one RBI. Josh Stowers reached base safely for the 31st straight game finishing 2-for-5 with a walk, three RBIs and a run scored, while Jake Snider was 2-for-4 with a walk and scored three runs. Lucas Dunn came off the bench to connect on a home run and three RBIs, and Zach Britton added a double and three RBIs.
The Bearcats (25-22) started fast on Wednesday scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Eric Santiago connected on a RBI double down the left field line to plate Manny Rodriguez for the first run. A wild pitch allowed Joey Wiemer to score the second run before a failed pickoff attempt allowed Santiago to steal home for the 3-0 lead.
Wearing black and pink jerseys as well as its black and pink hats in support of cancer awareness, Louisville evened the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the first inning as the first five batters of the inning reached base without a hit. Four straight walks by AJ Olasz to Tyler Fitzgerald, Snider, Mann and Wyatt resulted in the first run. After a pitching change, Tristan Hammans hit Stowers to push Snider home for the second run. Drew Campbell's RBI single to left plated Mann for the final run of the inning.
The Cardinals gained their first lead of the night in the second inning with another three-spot. Justin Lavey doubled and moved to third on sacrifice bunt before scoring on a balk by Hammans. Mann followed with a RBI double down the left field line to score Fitzgerald. After moving to third on a groundout, Mann went home on a throwing error by the Bearcats for the 6-3 cushion.
The lead moved to 7-3 in the fifth on a solo home run off the bat of Mann, who crushed a 3-2 pitch from Isaac Olson over the wall in center field to start the inning. The margin increased to 11-3 after a four-run sixth inning. Mann walked with the bases loaded allowing Lavey to score before Stowers sent Fitzgerald and Snider home with a single to left. Later in the inning, Britton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded sending Mann across for the final run of the inning.
Louisville extended the margin with a nine-run seventh inning. Wyatt connected on a two-run single and Ben Bianco was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the first three runs. Ethan Stringer had a RBI single and Britton added a RBI sacrifice fly. Dunn walked with the bases loaded and Adam Elliott had a RBI fielder's choice. Wyatt added a RBI single before Elliott scored on an error by the Bearcats.
Cincinnati ended the stretch of 20 consecutive runs for the Cardinals with three runs in the top of the eighth. Cole Murphy homered and Jordan Ramey had a two-run single for the Bearcats. The Cardinals answered with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Britton had a RBI double, Lavey delivered on a RBI groundout and Dunn launched a two-run homer to complete the scoring.
Up next, No. 28 Louisville returns to the road for a weekend series at Pittsburgh starting Friday at 6 p.m., ET. The Cardinals and Panthers will continue the series on Saturday at 3 p.m., before concluding on Sunday at 1 p.m.
