ABOUT THE LOUISVILLE CARDINALS
After registering its first ACC series sweep of the season with a trio of wins at Virginia Tech last weekend, Louisville pushed its winning streak to five games with Tuesday's 8-2 home victory against No. 6 Kentucky. Through six weeks of ACC action, the Cardinals have a 9-9 conference mark and are fourth in the Atlantic Division. The nation's last unbeaten team for the second straight year after winning 14 straight games to open the 2018 season, Louisville is ranked in one of six major national polls this week, 20th in the Collegiate Baseball poll.
Sophomore Logan Wyatt has a .339 average with two home runs, 34 RBIs, 16 doubles and 39 walks to pace the offense. Wyatt is ranked third in the nation in walks, sixth in doubles and 17th in on-base percentage. Danny Oriente has hit safely in 10 straight games lifting his season average to .338, while Josh Stowers ranks fifth in the nation with his 23 stolen bases and is 23rd nationally with his 31 walks.Ā
The pitching staff is led by the lefthanded duo of junior Adam Wolf and sophomore Nick Bennett. Wolf has a 4-2 record, 2.36 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 53.1 innings and nine series-opening starts. Bennett has registered a 4-0 record, 1.45 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 31.0 innings this season, including four straight weekend starts. The bullpen is paced by All-American righty Sam Bordner, who ranks ninth in the nation with his 10 saves in 2018.
Louisville is guided by head coach Dan McDonnell, who is in his 12th season in The Ville following a record-setting campaign in 2017 when the Cardinals ranked fifth in every major national poll after advancing to the College World Series for the fourth time in school history. UofL set a school record for wins with a 53-12 mark and earned the program's third straight ACC Atlantic Division title.
ABOUT THE VIRGINIA CAVALIERS
Virginia enters the weekend at 22-16 after midweek wins over Liberty and George Washington and the Cavaliers are 7-11 in the ACC after a series loss last weekend to North Carolina. Led by head coach Brian O'Connor, UVA has a .274 team batting average and a 3.82 ERA. Last season, the Cavaliers were 43-16 overall and second in the ACC Coastal with an 18-12 record before ending its season with a loss at the NCAA Fort Worth Regional.
SERIES HISTORY
Louisville leads 7-3 in the all-time series with Virginia, which dates back to 2015. The Cardinals have won all three weekend series between the teams since joining the ACC, including taking two of three games at Jim Patterson Stadium in 2016. Last season, UofL and UVA split the first two games in Charlottesville before the Cardinals scored two runs in the eighth inning of a 4-3 series-clinching win in game three.
