Former Louisville Standouts represent their countries in World Cup Qualifying
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Former University of Louisville women's soccer players Charlyn Corral and Chinyelu Asher are competing for their home nations at the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Championship. Corral is representing Mexico, while Asher is playing with Jamaica.
Corral scored a pair of goals to lead Mexico to a 4-1 victory over Trinidad and Tobago during group play of the CONCACAF Women's Championship. Corral earned starts in all three games for Mexico. Mexico's 1-2 record in group play was not enough to send them to the semi-final rounds of the tournament.
Asher and Jamaica registered three wins in group play to finish second overall in Group B and qualify for the semifinal round, where they fell 6-0 to the United States. Asher has started all four matches for Jamaica so far in the tournament, completing each appearance with a passing accuracy of 85 percent or higher. Asher and Jamaica will play Panama on October 17 for third place in the CONCACAF Women's Championships. A win over Panama would send Jamaica to France for the 2019 Women's World Cup.
Corral graduated from the University of Louisville in 2013. In her final season, Corral earned first team NSCAA All-Northeast Region honors and was named to the NSCAA Scholar All-America team. She was named American Athletic Conference Midfielder of the Year and earned first team All-American Athletic Conference honors.
In her two-year career as a Cardinal, Corral finished with 21 goals and 18 assists for 60 points. In just two seasons with Louisville, Corral left her mark in the record books. She ranked third in career assists and fifth in points scored. Her 13 goals last season rank sixth in school history and her 11 assists rank second all time.
Asher spent one season with the Cardinals, transferring from Purdue. She made an immediate impact in her final season with the Cardinals, starting in the midfield all 18 matches. She finished the season with one goal and one assist. In her three seasons at Purdue she scored nine goals and dished out eight assists for 26 points.
