Cottrell and Worrell Named to USA National Swim Team

University of Louisville swimmers Kelsi Worrell and Andrea Cottrell have been named to the 2016-17 USA National Swimming Team and the list is headlined by 37 medalists from the 2016 Olympic Games

Cottrell qualified in the 100-breast and Worrell in the 100-fly and the 200-fly.

"Qualifying for the USA Swimming National Team in an Olympic year is an impressive accomplishment, as every swimmer in the country is aiming to perform at their best at the Olympic Trials and beyond. This team represents the best of the best in the United States," said Frank Busch, USA Swimming National Team Director. "There is a great mix of veterans and talented newcomers on the 2016-17 National Team, and we look forward to building on the record-setting performances in Rio heading into the next Olympic quad."

The 2016-17 USA Swimming National Team By the Numbers:

• 106 National Team members (53 men; 53 women)
• 31 states represented; California leads the way with 16 National Team members
• 50-plus USA Swimming clubs represented
• 37 medalists from the 2016 Olympic Games
• 12 swimmers qualified for the National Team in three-plus events
• 21 first-time National Team members
• 8 members of the 2015-16 National Junior Team made the leap to National Team
• 65 personal coaches of National Team athletes honored as 2016-17 National Team coaches

The 2016-17 USA Swimming National Team features the top six athletes in each Olympic event from the combined results of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Swimming, 2016 Olympic Games and 2016 U.S. Open.

Among the headliners of the 2016-17 USA Swimming National Team are Katie Ledecky (Bethesda, Md./Nation's Capital Swim Club) and Michael Phelps (Baltimore, Md./North Baltimore Aquatic Club), who earned National Team status in three events each. Ledecky ranks as the top American in the women's 200-, 400- and 800-meter freestyle events, while Phelps was tops in the men's 100m fly, 200m fly and 200m IM.

At the 2016 Olympic Games, Ledecky became the fourth American woman to win four gold medals at a single Olympics and became just the second woman to claim gold in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle titles at the same Olympic Games.
