Righty pitcher closed collegiate career as Louisville’s career leader in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched and starts
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville righthanded pitcher Kyle Funkhouser was recently named as a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American adding another honor to his stellar collegiate career.
A native of Oak Forest, Illinois, Funkhouser was one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Senior CLASS Award, won by Campbell's Matt Parrish. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Funkhouser, a 2016 graduate with a degree in marketing, closed his collegiate career as Louisville's career leader in wins (35), strikeouts (376), innings pitched (380.2) and starts (56). Selected in the fourth round of the 2016 Major League Baseball Draft as the 115th selection overall by the Detroit Tigers, Funkhouser is a two-time All-American, a former Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and holds the school record for single season wins with 13 in 2014. This season, Funkhouser has won his final six starts and finished at 9-3 overall with a 3.86 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 93.1 innings.
The honor for Funkhouser marked the second time in three seasons a Louisville player has been selected as a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-American as Jeff Gardner also received the honor in 2014.
The Louisville baseball team closed its 2016 season with a 50-14 record overall after winning its second straight ACC Atlantic Division championship, advancing to a fourth straight NCAA Super Regional and reaching the 50-win plateau for the fourth time in school history.
