Harrington pitches six shutout innings to win fifth straight start; Summers leads offense with three hits
The Cardinals (22-5, 8-3 ACC) extended their winning streak to five games while outscoring their opponents 64-8 during the stretch. Louisville, which has three shutouts in its last four outings, also improved to 18-1 at home this season with Sunday's series-clinching victory over the Hokies (10-18, 1-10 ACC).
All nine starters in Louisville's lineup had hit safely before the completion of Sunday's game-changing nine-run third inning. Sophomore outfielder Ryan Summers paced the way for the Cardinals finishing 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore shortstop Devin Hairston led four other Louisville players with two hits closing the day 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored, while junior outfielder Corey Ray homered for the second straight day to highlight a 2-for-5 outing. Junior catcher Will Smith doubled and scored twice in his two-hit performance and sophomore third baseman Blake Tiberi added two of Louisville's 16 hits.
On the mound, junior lefthander Drew Harrington scattered five hits in six shutout innings to win his fifth straight start and improve to 6-1 on the season. A native of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Harrington has 38 strikeouts and only eight walks in 44.0 innings while lowering his season ERA to 1.23. Sunday's outing also marked the fifth time in seven starts this season Harrington has not allowed a run.
Junior righthander Shane Hummel added two strikeouts in two shutout innings of relief, while redshirt freshman righty Chandler Dale had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth inning to complete the shutout.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second inning on a RBI groundout by Hairston to plate Rosenbaum before sending 13 batters to the plate in the nine-run third inning. The 14th time this season Louisville has scored at least four runs in an inning, the scoring in Sunday's third frame started with Ray launching his ninth home run of the season over the centerfield wall on a 1-1 pitch from Hokies lefty Jon Woodcock to lead off the inning. The inning also included a RBI single by Tiberi, two-run double by Hairston, two-run double by junior outfielder Colin Lyman, RBI single by Summers and a two-run double by freshman second baseman Devin Mann.
Louisville extended the lead to 12-0 in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Smith and a RBI single from Summers. The final run of the day came in the eighth inning on a RBI single up the middle by catcher Zeke Pinkham, the first collegiate hit for the freshman. Woodcock took the loss for the Hokies and dropped to 1-6 on the season allowing six runs on six hits in 2.1 innings.
The Cardinals and Hokies conclude their series Monday at 7 p.m., on ESPNU and admission is free at Jim Patterson Stadium.
