Men finish 11th at NCAAs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville men's swimming and diving team finished 11th to cap a successful meet at the 2016 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Texas won its second straight NCAA team title capturing a whopping 541.5 points followed by California (351), Florida (334), NC State (314), and Georgia (239.5) to round out the top-5. Alabama finished sixth with 225 points followed by Tennessee (188), Missouri (184), Indiana (180.5), and Auburn (167) to round out the top-10. The Cardinals received the second most points out of the ACC schools, trailing only NC State.
After four days of action, there were 10 NCAA Championship and NCAA records set as well as nine American and U.S. Open records. In total, there were 16 McAuley Pool Records set at the event.
"We competed hard all week achieving new markers for our program including the highest point total we have ever scored, the most championship final swims and the highest relay finish in program history," said head coach Arthur Albiero. "We are grateful to this senior class and everything they have done for our program."
In the 200 breaststroke, Carlos Claverie finished sixth in the 200 breaststroke marking a personal best finish of 1:53.55, which was almost a second better than his preliminaries time.
Texas sophomore Joseph Schooling finished in 1:37.97 becoming the first man under 1:38 and breaking both the NCAA and U.S. Open records.
Following a stellar performance in the 100 backstroke on Friday night, Grigory Tarasevich won the B-Final of the 200 backstroke by boarding a time of 1:39.81 en route to his ninth place finish and earning honorable mention All-America honors.
California's Ryan Murphy set the NCAA Record a became the first man ever to finish under 1:36 in the 200 back with his 1:35.73 finish to have three of the four fastest swims in history.
The 400 free relay foursome of finished 2:52.18 to finish 13th. Matthias Lindenbauer led off the relay with a 43.25 split before Grigory Tarasevich swam a 42.27 in the backstroke. David Boland swam a 43.95 split before giving away to anchor Trevor Carroll with a 42.71 split to cap an impressive week for the Cardinals.
In his final diving competition as a Cardinal, senior Sean Piner finished 44th in the platform diving event with 259.90 points.
