Cards in 12th after Day 2 of NCAAs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville Cardinals had a bronze medal medley relay performance to highlight Day 2 of the 2016 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Thursday night at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech.
Â
The Cardinals are currently sitting in 12th place after two days with 60 points. Texas leads the field with 209 points followed by Florida (163), California (141), NC State (137), Michigan (90), Missouri (81), Tennessee (79), Auburn (72.5), Georgia (68), Alabama (68) to round out the top 10.
Â
"What a great day for our program," said UofL head coach Arthur Albiero. "Our 200 free relay came together this morning by qualifying in the top-16. Until a couple weeks ago, we had not qualified this relay to compete at the NCAAs. Our 400-yard medley relay achieved our highest relay finish in school history, third place with a new school record. Tonight's performances generated big momentum leading up to a great session tomorrow morning."
Â
In the 400-yard medley relay, Grigory Tarasevich (45.42), Carlos Claverie (51.62), Pedro Coutinho (45.85), Trevor Carroll (42.02) touched for a school record time of 3:04.73 to take third place in the finals. Tarasevich set a school record split-time in the backstroke leg of the relay. The third place finish was the highest relay finish in school history.
Â
The 200-free relay team of Trevor Carroll (19.89), Grigory Tarasevich (19.21), David Boland (19.47), and Matthias Lindenbauer (19.67) combined for a 1:18.24 and 15th place.
Â
Texas won its fifth NCAA title in just six swimming events so far at the 2016 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving National Championships. The team of John Shebat, Will Licon, Joseph Schooling and Jack Conger went 3:00.68 to shatter the NCAA and U.S. Open records along with their own pool record from this morning.
Â
Tomorrow's events will include the 400-IM, 100-fly, 200-free, 100-breast, 100-back, and 200-medley relay.
Â
Every session of the four-day meet will be streamed live online.
