
Volleyball Sweeps Notre Dame in ACC Opener

Fairs has 17 kills
Erin Fairs had 17 kills, an ace and two blocks to lead the University of Louisville volleyball team to a 25-23, 25-19, 25-16 win over Notre Dame in the ACC opening match.

"It was an exciting win and great way to start the ACC season. Erin Fairs had a huge night. Not only was she powerful, but she played her smartest match of the year. I was very please with the way that Roxanne McVey handled serve receive because Notre Dame is a great serving team," said UofL head coach Anne Kordes. Â

The Cards hit a season-high .388 and registered 5.5 blocks led by Janelle Jenkins' three. Freshman Aniah Philo had 10 kills, hitting .350 on the left with an ace and seven digs. Notre Dame was led by Sam Fry's 10 kills and two blocks.  UofL moves to 7-4 and 1-0 in the ACC. ND is 5-8 and 0-1 in the league.

 In the first set, UofL led at 1-0, 3-2 and then not again until the last three point of the set. Uof L hit .444 led by Erin Fairs' nine kills. Lyndsay Palmer served the last seven straight points of the set to keep the Irish out of system.

"Lyndsay Palmer heroicially saved the first set for our team with two aces in the long run she had coming off the bench," said Kordes.

The late momentum from the first set carried over into the second as the Cards ran out to an 9-4 lead. UofL extended the lead to 196 but the Irish made an 8-1 run to get within six at 20-14. Two blocks by Tess Clark, a pair of kills by Erin Fairs took the Cards to set point at 24-18. Sam Fry scored for the Irish but a kill by Aniah Philo tipped the set to the Cards.

In the final set, the Cards jumped out to a 7-2 lead and the Irish had to burn both timeouts but could not get any traction as UofL pulled away using .455 hitting.  The Cards won 25-16.
