No. 6 Cards Fly Past Dayton to Continue Three-Game Homestand

The Cardinals set a school record for team hitting percentage (.487) in the rally scoring era.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 6-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team blanked the (RV) Dayton Flyers (25-14, 25-14, 25-11) on Monday night at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
Louisville (3-1) put down 43 kills on a .487 hitting percentage, setting a program record for team hitting percentage in the rally scoring era. In addition to the record-breaking night offensively, the Cardinals also excelled on the defensive end by holding Dayton (3-1) to only 24 kills on a .034 hitting percentage.
"It was a great match," said head coach Dan Meske. "Dayton's a really good program that plays teams really tough, and to play the way that we did against a program like that was really impressive. It's nice to get a lot of people involved. It's always the plan to play our best and if we have opportunities for people to get some chances, we'll take advantage and today was a great day. We had a lot of people get some extended time which was nice."
Outside hitter Chloe Meester fueled the Cardinals' offense with a career-high 14 kills on 18 swings with no errors, good for a .778 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Chloe Chicoine recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 kills on a .556 hitting percentage and 11 digs, recording her 1,000th career dig late in the second set. Middle blocker Addison Makun swarmed the Flyers' offense with a career-high six blocks, five of which came in the third set. Opposite Kalyssa Blackshear added eight kills on .429 hitting, while middle blocker Brooke Bultema recorded six kills without an error on nine swings for a .667 hitting percentage.
Nayelis Cabello orchestrated the Louisville attack for much of the evening, dishing out 29 assists before handing off setting duties to freshman Blair Thiebaud in the third set, where she set a career-best with seven assists.
SET 1
The Flyers got on the board early scoring the first two points of the set, but their lead didn't last long as the Cards scored seven straight points to force a timeout with a score of 7-2. UofL pushed the pace, going on an 8-3 run that featured a pair of blocks by Nayelis Cabello to bring the score to 15-5 at the media break. The Louisville defense continued to clamp down, holding the Flyers to just seven kills while forcing 10 attack errors in the set, leading to a 25-14 set win for the Cardinals.
SET 2
The teams stayed even at 3-3 through the first six points of the set, but the Cards soared out to a 15-6 lead heading into the media timeout on the heels of a 12-3 scoring spree keyed by six kills from Meester. Dayton began to find their footing out of the break, but the Cards would not let up as Makun earned back-to-back kills to seal the 25-14 set win.
SET 3
UofL carried the momentum into the third set, scoring six unanswered points that featured back-to-back aces by Cabello and three-straight blocks by Makun to force a Flyers' timeout. Blackshear earned a kill to make the score 7-0 before Dayton finally got on the board. The Cardinals kept up the all-around dominance as they cruised to a score of 15-6 at the media break. Chicoine claimed her first double-double of the season with an exclamation point kill to secure the sweep with a score of 25-11.
