Volleyball Opens ACC Slate with Notre Dame and Miami

Cards travel to ND and host UM at the KFC Yum!
The University of Louisville volleyball team kicks off its ACC schedule with two conference matches this week. The Cardinals will travel to South Bend, Ind. to face Notre Dame at 7 p.m. on Friday before returning home on Sunday afternoon for a 12:30 p.m. first serve against Miami at the KFC Yum! Center. Sunday's match against Miami is Girl Scout Day and the Hike & Spike match.
Louisville enters the week with a 6-4 overall record after defeating Cincinnati 3-1 and falling to No. 24 Kentucky 3-1 last week. Against Cincinnati, the Cards were led by junior outside hitter Janelle Jenkins, who had a match-high 13 kills, three aces, and three blocks for the 25-20, 28-30, 25-11, 25-15 win over the Bearcats. Louisville hit .294 with five aces and 11.5 blocks to Cincinnati's .126 hitting percentage and 10 blocks. Both teams struggled from the service line, combining for 27 service errors. In the Battle of the Bluegrass match against the Wildcats, senior Erin Fairs had 15 kills and two blocks but the Cards fell 27-25, 18-25, 20-25, 23-25. Louisville hit .171 with 30 hitting errors and also was plagued with service errors, committing 14. UK hit .191 but used 17 blocks and three aces. Jenkins added 15 kills and sophomore Maggie DeJong had 10 kills while sophomore Tess Clark had a team-high eight blocks for the Cardinals. UK was led by sophomore duo Darian Mack, who had 14 kills, and Kaz Brown, who roofed the Cards 13 times.
On the season, senior outside hitter Erin Fairs leads the Cardinal attack with 152 kills averaging 3.80 kills per set. Junior outside hitter Janelle Jenkins joins Fairs in triple digits as she adds 123 kills while junior outside hitter Maya McClendon adds 97 kills for the Cardinal attack. Senior setter Katie George has 454 assists on the season and leads the ACC with an average of 11.35 assists per set, while freshman libero Molly Sauer has 168 digs (4.20 digs per set) and leads the team with 16 aces.
Notre Dame presents a familiar foe for the Cardinals as the two schools have met previously as conference members of the BIG EAST. The Fighting Irish enter the match with a 5-7 record after going 1-2 in the Purdue Boiler Box Challenge last weekend. Sophomore outside hitter Sam Fry was the lone Fighting Irish to earn all-tournament team honors after she posted 43 kills on a .356 attack percentage and had 14 blocks on the weekend. On the season, Fry leads the team with 151 kills and a team-best 44 blocks while fellow sophomore Sydney Kuhn adds 93 kills for the Irish. Sophomore setter Maddie Dilfer posts a team-high 421 assists and averages 8.96 assists per set while freshman libero Ryann DeJarld leads the team with 189 digs and averages 3.89 digs per set. The Fighting Irish lead the series 19-11 over the Cardinals. The two teams split the series last season with Louisville claiming a 3-0 win at home behind a .324 attack percentage to ND's 0.38. The Fighting Irish avenged the loss with a 3-2 comeback win in South Bend later in the season.

Going into the midweek matchup against instate rival Florida State on Wednesday, the Hurricanes boast a 7-3 record and are currently riding a four-game win streak. Sophomore outside hitter Olga Strantzali leads the Hurricanes attack with 137 kills (3.42 kills per set) and a team-high 21 service aces. Redshirt junior outside hitter Kelsie Groot joins Strantzali in triple digits with 106 kills. Senior outside hitter Taylor Scott has 93 kills while senior middle blocker Alexis Mourning has 83 kills and a team-high 43 blocks. Sophomore setter Haley Templeton sets up the offense with 408 assists and averages 10.20 assists per set. Senior Kalysta White boasts a team-best 141 digs and averages 3.44 digs per set for the Hurricanes. Louisville leads the series 2-1 against the Hurricanes but fell 3-0 last season in Miami.
The Cardinals continue their three-game home stand with conference matchups against Syracuse and Boston College next weekend at the KFC Yum! Center.Â
