
Funkhouser, Kidston Earn Freshman All-America Honors

TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Louisville righthanded pitchers Kyle Funkhouser and Anthony Kidston were named Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Americans on Wednesday by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Funkhouser, a native of Oak Forest, Ill., enters this weekend's NCAA Super Regional at 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 20 appearances on the mound, including six starts. He has 51 strikeouts in 52.0 innings pitched and opposing batters are hitting just .215 against him. Earlier this season, Funkhouser delivered the Cardinals' first complete game shutout since 2009 when he struck out a career best eight and allowed only four hits in a win at Eastern Kentucky on May 7. The talented righty kicked off his collegiate career with 18.0 straight scoreless innings for Louisville.
Kidston, from Defiance, Ohio, is 5-0 with a 1.31 ERA in 13 appearances as a pitcher, including six starts. He has 58 strikeouts in 48.0 innings pitched and opposing batters are hitting just .152 against him. A two-way talent who also plays first base, Kidston opened his career by earning wins in each of his first two appearances on the mound, followed by a save in his third outing and three more wins in his first four starts. His best start of the season came on April 14 when he matched a career high with seven strikeouts while working a career best eight shutout innings to earn the win against visiting Elon.

Up next, the eighth-ranked Cardinals travel to Nashville, Tenn., for a 2013 NCAA Super Regional showdown with No. 2 national seed Vanderbilt. Saturday's Super Regional opener is set for a 3 p.m., ET start on the Vanderbilt campus and will be televised nationally on ESPN, while game two of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m., ET on ESPN. If necessary, the deciding third game is set for Monday at 7 p.m., ET on ESPN2 with the winning team advancing to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
