LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team defeated the University of Dayton 2-0 on Saturday at McDonald's Field. With previous wins over Ohio State, a Louisville Alumni squad and Indiana, the Cardinals finished the spring with a record of 4-0.
Louisville got an early goal just 10 minutes into the game off a corner kick. Dayton was unable to clear a well placed corner kick by junior Caitlin Rehder, and the ball eventually fell to the feet of Emily Cardell. Having scored for the Cards in each of their spring matches, Cardell continued her goal scoring form as she blasted the ball past the Dayton goalkeeper from the top of the six yard box to put the Cardinals up 1-0.
The Cards' second goal came by virtue of another corner kick five minutes before halftime. Rehder played a ball into Courtney Holtz, who played it back to Rehder to play into the box. Rehder's curling driven ball eluded the Dayton goalkeeper as it went off her hands and into the back of the net.
Dayton responded well, which required a very strong defensive effort by the backline of Courtney Holtz, Meredith Tolley, Ashley Racette, and Caitlin Beck, alongside goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer, to deny them quality scoring opportunities and preserve the shutout.
The University of Louisville women's soccer team will return to home action in the fall as it takes on the University of Tennessee in an exhibition game at Cardinal Park on August 14.
