Hello Again Cards Fans,
The past month has been a pretty busy one for those of us in The Ville for the summer. Here's what we've been up to...
A couple of weeks ago we hosted our high school camp. There were about 100 campers split into five teams, and we had training sessions with them in the morning and afternoon and games in the evenings. This year, we also had a Cardinal Olympics, where teams competed in shooting, dribbling, passing, and heading contests. Meredith Tolley's team was the winner of that event, so good job to them. The overall team champion was Jennifer Jones's team, with Natalie Cocchi head-coaching. They were good, but mine and Heather Engel's team only lost to them 2-0 and our players made us a cake, so I think we all know who the real winners were ;).
The big event (maybe even bigger than actually playing soccer) this year was skit day. Each team made up their own skit, and some of them were pretty hilarious. One team sang "I'm On a Boat" (edited to include Louisville references and exclude explicit content, of course), and the winner, Shannon Leamy's team, did an "America's Got Talent" spinoff, complete with Subway "eat fresh" commercials. The coaches even had a skit of our own, which you can view by clicking on the link somewhere on this page. It was called Caitlin Beck's variety hour, and I think it went really well -- sort of. Anyway, camp was great; and so was the middle school camp a week later!
After camp weeks were over, we headed up to Chicago, Ill., to play in the regional tournament with our summer team, Cincinnati United Premier. Katie Zoeller, Jessica Mello and I have played with them for the past two summers, and have been close to winning the tournament both times. Two years ago we were knocked out because of a point differential rule (we scored one less goal than the team that won) and last year we lost in the finals in penalty kicks. So this year (with Jenny Jones and Caitlin Beck), we were hoping to make the trip to Nationals, but the soccer gods were not smiling on us. As we made our way over to the fields for game one, we discovered that we are some very spoiled kids playing on such nice fields in the Big East. This field looked more like a rock pile with random patches of grass planted in it. We complained a bit, being the spoiled divas that we are, but at the end of the day we had to suck it up and play. The game wasn't pretty, but we managed to pull out a tie. In fact, we managed to pull out a lot of ties (three in all!) over the weekend, and the eventual champion was the MO team, which had three wins and a tie against (who do you think??) us.
I'd love to say we went into the city because Chicago's tons of fun, but we were so focused on the tournament we just couldn't wait, that's a lie -- we were just way too tired because it was so HOT!! ;). Anyway, despite all the ties and everything, the weekend was fun. Plus, we got to stay at Caley Egan's house, which was great because we miss her down here! So shout out to all the CUP girls (and Brian!) -- good job in Chi-Town.
After regionals we had our regeneration week, which means we only had two lifts and a couple of non-impact conditioning days. So with the slow training week, we made sure to get out and enjoy the city. On July 2, we went to "Downs After Dark", which is what they call night racing at Churchill Downs. There were about six races and a live band in the paddock. We decided to stay away from the betting booths, but it was still cool to watch the horses race under the lights. I wonder if they love that as much as I love playing in a night game? hmm...
As part of our 4th of July Festivities, we went to Bernheim Forest, an arboretum about 20 minutes south of the city. We went hiking on some of the trails, picnicked and just enjoyed nature for the day. My favorite part was the wildflower hike...there were so many flowers and they were beautiful and I loved them.
So that brings us up to this week--we're currently back in the flow of lifting, running and playing some soccer while anxiously awaiting the return of those coming in town for the third session of summer school! More updates to come!!
See ya around town,
Lindsay
