Hello Cards fans,
My name is Lindsay Boling, and I'll be a senior next fall. My, how the time's flown by. It seems like just yesterday I was a disheveled freshman - my hair was a mess, I couldn't give directions to save my life, I acted like I was five years old - oh wait, things haven't changed that much. In all honesty, though, I know I've matured a bit since coming to school here three years ago, and am truly sad that this will be my last year as a Cardinal. With that said, I am so excited about next season, which is just around the corner! Since you guys don't get to see much of what's happening in the off-season, we thought we'd share with you a little bit about what daily life is like around here and what we've all been doing lately...
During the last week of school all of the Louisville athletes get together to celebrate the year at the All-Sports Banquet. Each team has representatives who run the show, giving out awards and presenting highlight videos (including media bloopers, which is classic and of course everybody's favorite). Its fun to get to hear about all of the accomplishments other teams have had over the past year and get dressed up. Plus, this year we won the coveted Cardinal Cup, which is the award given to the team with the most community service hours. It was a race to the finish, and I don't think any of us were breathing as they announced the award. It is now in a prime spot in our living room, and will be heading into the trophy case soon! All in all, it was a fun night and I can't wait until next year!!
After the All-Sports Banquet, we had a week off to finish exams (we all passed! whew) and then it was Derby week in The Ville. As a Louisvillian, I must say that this is one of, if not my most, favorite times of the year. There are so many events leading up to it like concerts, art fairs, and firework shows; and for all of you celeb gawkers out there, this is the prime time to spot some of the most famous people in the world. There's nothing like walking into your old pizza place on Bardstown Road and spotting Hugh Hefner and his entourage of women chomping down on a slice of pepperoni (true story). Plus, everybody wears really cool hats! It's by far the craziest time of year here in Louisville and I love it. In the middle of the Derby festivities, my sister and I ventured up to Columbus, OH to see Fleetwood Mac, which is in our opinions one of the greatest bands OF ALL TIMEE. The concert was amazing, and I must say at 60 years old they definitely give any young band today a run for their money.
So after our fun-filled Derby week, Katie Zoeller, Jessica Mello, and I decided to take a much needed vacation and visit our old teammate Monique Gjini in Maui, Hawaii. Monique is living out there now, enjoying the tough life of surf, sand, and palm trees and we of course took the opportunity to pop in and check up on her ;). Now, with soccer taking up most of my time for the past fifteen years, I haven't done much travelling, but I'm pretty sure Maui is one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Where else can you find a beach, mountains, bamboo and rain forests, waterfalls, farmland, AND a volcano all in one place! We spent ten days on the island, seeing every inch of it from the North Shore where all of the surfers hang out (hey boys) to the black and red sand beaches in Hana. We loved seeing all of the colorful plants and wildlife-well, most of the wildlife. One night while we were unsuspectingly watching our daily dose of The Office, what we thought was a huge fly buzzed right past us. Monique being the brave one went to check it out, and turns out it was a GIANT flying COCKROACH. This announcement did not bode well in a room full of girls, as we all ran screaming into the bedroom leaving Monique to fend for herself (such good friends). When she announced she had it trapped under a hat, we all came out slowly to watch her take it outside. Well, somewhere along the way the little sneak escaped and our screams were probably heard on the mainland. We finally managed to get him out, but not soon after Monique's neighbor came running over because he probably thought we were being attacked. He was not too happy when we meekly replied that there was a bug. Whoops.
One night on the island we drove the hour and a half up to the top of Haleakala (the volcano) to watch the sunset. As we drove the 10,000 feet up through the clouds we saw sunshine and beach, then an overcast forest, then farmlands and a Polo tournament, then desert and rock. Once we arrived at the top, watching the sunset was one of the most surreal and beautiful things I've ever seen. Hawaii was so much fun, but sadly we had to return to "real life" on the mainland.
We've been back for a little over a week now, and have been getting into the swing of things at UofL, working out with Teena, our strength coach, and working some camps in the area. There are only five of us in town now-some local kids, some just taking classes-so we are anxiously awaiting our teammates' returns as they begin to trickle in throughout the summer. More blogs to come so stay tuned for summer training in The Ville!!
Aloha,
Lindsay
