
Men's Soccer Defeats No. 21 New Mexico 2-1 in Double Overtime

Albuquerque, N.M. - The Louisville men's soccer team defeated No. 21 New Mexico 2-1 in double overtime to win the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Sophomore JT Murray scored the game-winner just 1:33 into the second overtime to help the Cardinals improve to 3-0-1 on the season.
The first period ended with neither team scoring. New Mexico held a 7-4 shot advantage but the Cardinals were the only team to finish the period with a shot on goal. The Cardinal offense seemed to dominate in the second period with a 14-8 shot advantage.
But it was the Lobo's Chris Wright who found the goal first in the 65th minute off a pass from Justin Davis. Four minutes later, Louisville's Bryan Kanu headed a pass from Ryan McDonald into the net to for the equalizer. Louisville finished the second period with four shots on goal. New Mexico finished with one more shot on goal but neither team could convert the shots into a score, forcing the overtime period.
The first overtime period ended with either team scoring. The Cardinals finished with two shots, including one on goal while the Lobos finished with one shot. Just a 1:33 into the second overtime period Murray launched a bullet from the left corner to give the Cards the win.
Louisville finished the game with a 21-6 shot advantage while the Lobos had a 9-7 corner kick advantage. Freshman keeper Andre Boudreaux finished with one save and his third win of the season. New Mexico's Eric Staver finished with six saves.
Four Cardinals, Kanu, Boudreaux, Austin Berry, and Othaniel Yanez, were named to the all-tournament team. Kanu was named the Offensive MVP while Berry earned Defensive MVP honors.
Louisville will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 11 as they host Lipscomb at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
