
Smyth Named Preseason All-BIG EAST

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Louisville forward Shannon Smyth has been selected to the 2008 All-BIG EAST Preseason team as determined by a vote of the league's 16 head coaches.
Smyth, a senior from Milwaukee earned Second Team All-BIG EAST in 2007 after leading the BIG EAST in game winning goals, netting five on the season. Her six goals and 15 points were tops on the Cardinals and her three assists tied for the team lead. Three of her goals were in overtime, and two of those came in the second overtime period.
She started 16 matches and played in 21 while helping the Cardinals to a school record 13 wins and a second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament.
Smyth also competed for Ireland in the World University Games and spent time in Ireland's National women's team camp.
Notre Dame senior Brittany Bock was named preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Villanova's junior back Kelly Egan was named Defensive Player of the Year and UConn senior Stephanie Labbe was tabbed preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
Louisville opens the regular season on August 22 in Indianapolis against Butler at 5:00 p.m. ET.
