
Cardinal Rally Falls Short in 8-4 Loss Sunday

TAMPA, Fla. - USF scored five straight runs to break a 3-3 tie, and despite a late rally by the University of Louisville, held off the Cards for an 8-4 win Sunday to salvage the final game of the series.
Louisville (19-14, 6-6 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Jeff Arnold hit a leadoff double and moved to third on a throwing error by Addison Maruszak. Tyler Mickits's RBI groundout put the Cards on top.
The Bulls (16-18, 6-9 BIG EAST) took a 3-1 lead on the bottom of the second when the first five reached safely, including RBI singles by Stephen Hunt and Trey Manz.
Phil Wunderlich reached on an error with one away in the third, and an out later, Chris Dominguez crushed his 11th home run of the season, taking a 3-2 pitch the other way to knot the game at three.
Manz hit a leadoff double in the fourth for USF and eventually he scored on Brandon Smith's sac fly to center.
The Bulls then made it 5-3 in the fifth on an RBI double by Jonathon Koscso.
The Bulls added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and another in the eighth.
In the ninth, Mickits singled and Alec Lowrey drew a pinch walk. Two outs later Wunderlich singled down the left field line to cut the lead to 8-4, but the Cards could get no closer.
Cardinal starter Dean Kiekhefer lasted just an inning plus, allowing three runs on two hits and two walks. Neil Holland replaced him and worked two scoreless innings, giving up a pair of hits, fanning one.
Gavin Logsdon(0-3) worked two innings, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk, striking out one in the loss. James Belanger gave up two runs on three hits in an inning and a third. Thomas Royse gave up a hit and struck out one in two-thirds of an inning. Matt Lea finished things out for the Cards, allowing a run on two hits in the final inning.
USF starter Derrick Stultz (3-3) went eight plus, allowing four runs, just one of which was earned, on eight hits and a walk, striking out four to earn the win. Stephen Hunt was chased after the single by Wunderlich and replaced by Shawn Sanford, who recorded the final out of the game for his sixth save.
The Cards will host Indiana on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. ET before travelling to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
