PITTSBURGH, Pa. - For the second consecutive season, Pitt's Nate Reed tossed a complete game against the University of Louisville, leading the Panthers to a 7-2 win over the Cardinals Friday in the series opener.
The Panthers (7-12, 1-3 BIG EAST) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Dan Williams.
The Cardinals (13-8, 2-2 BIG EAST) had runners cut down at the plate to end the first and second innings.
A sac fly to center off the bat of Jordan Herr scored Nick Mullins to extend the Panthers lead to 2-0 in the second.
An RBI double to right center by Williams in the bottom of the third made it 3-0 Panthers, and Williams scored on a single to right by Chris Warner for a 4-0 advantage.
UofL sophomore Chris Dominguez singled with two out in the top of the sixth and moved to third on a double by Jeff Arnold. Dominguez then put the Cards on the board with a straight steal of home to make it 4-1 Pitt.
Three singles loaded the bases for the Panthers in the bottom of the sixth and Sean Conley's seeing-eye single rolled through the right side, plating two more for a 6-1 edge, and chasing Cardinal starter Zack Pitts.
Morgan Kielty hit a solo home run down the right field line to lead off the seventh, making it 7-1.
Dominguez opened the Cardinal eighth with a double and moved to third on an error. Arnold's sac fly to center scored the second Cardinal run of the game.
Reed (3-3) allowed one earned run, scattering seven hits and four walks while striking out three.
Pitts (4-2) took the loss, surrendering five earned on 11 hits and two walks, while striking out five in 5.2 innings.
Freshman Neil Holland gave up a run on three hits in an inning and two-thirds, striking out one. Gavin Logsdon recorded the final two outs, fanning one.
Dominguez had three of the Cardinals' seven hits, scoring their only two runs.
Game two is set for Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET at Trees Field.
