CARSON, Cal. - Former University of Louisville All-American goalkeeper Joanna Haig has been training with the US Women's Under-23 team in California since January 12 and will remain there through the 19th.
A Third-Team All-American by Soccer Buzz, established school records for single season minutes (2,110), goals against average (0.47) and shutouts (12), as well as career GAA (0.48) and shutouts (20) in 2007. She finished the season third in the nation in save% (0.893) and fifth in GAA.
The senior from Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, did not leave the field during her senior season, posting a 13-6-2 record in net, as the Cardinals tied a school record for wins and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second consecutive season. She was selected to the NSCAA/adidas NCAA Division I All-Great Lakes Region Second Team, Soccer Buzz First Team All-Region, All BIG EAST second team and was a ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® women's soccer First Team member..
She was also one of 10 finalists for the Inaugural Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in the Women's Soccer division. The award is presented in eight NCAA Division I sports to a senior student-athlete who has outstanding attributes in four areas: the classroom, community, character and competition.
During her brief career with the Cardinals she virtually rewrote the record books, despite playing just two seasons in the Red and Black. She has also spent time with the US Soccer U20 and U21 National teams.
Below is a journal entry updating her experiences with US Soccer.
I have been to many training camps before but this one has been especially fun because I have not seen my teammates form the national team since last June when I tore my MCL at camp. In addition, the purpose of this camp is to select a roster to take to Spain in February. There are three other goalkeepers in camp with me and it has been a very fun, competitive environment so far this week. I am currently on my day off because we played two games last night and the field players probably will not even be able to walk down to breakfast. The game I played in last night went well, my team beat a women's club 4-1, dominating the entire match. Previously, on the second day, we played a U-16 Boys California Select team and I played in the first half. I let in one goal, but throughout the scrimmage I was very, very busy and made a few nice saves, and had a blast doing it. Well, I am going to go hit up The Coffee Bean, my favorite coffee shop ever, and get some quality study time in. Later, I will head across the street to the mall and maybe buy a dress for the student-athlete dance while enjoying the 70-degree weather, I know you are all jealous.
