LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's soccer team is set to open their 22nd season of competition on Friday when they host Ohio University at 5:00 p.m. ET in Cardinal Park.
Head Coach Karen Ferguson, the winningest coach in Cardinal history, will be at the helm for her seventh season, after guiding the Cards to consecutive seasons of double-figure wins for the first time in school history.
For the first time in program history, Louisville appeared in the NSCAA /adidas National Rankings, receiving votes that placed the team 29th in the preseason poll.
The Cardinals logged a pair of come-from-behind wins during an undefeated preseason. On August 16, U of L traveled to Morgantown, West Virginia, and after trailing 2-0 in the early going Louisville struck for four unanswered goals in an upset of the 18th-ranked Mountaineers.
The Cards were down 1-0 to Nebraska in the Jenna Cooper Memorial Match August 19, when the Red and Black struck for consecutive first half goals for a 2-1 win.
Forward Jamie Craft netted two goals during the preseason, including the game winner against Nebraska. The senior was selected to the preseason All-BIG EAST Team and enters the season second all time in school history in goals (33) and points (75). Craft is the only player in school history to be a postseason all-conference choice three times.
Co-captain and fellow senior Amy Seng, who had an assist against Nebraska, anchors the Cardinal defense, having started every match of her collegiate career and has been joined by sophomores Jessica Mello and Mallory Lampson and freshman Sara Scharoun during the preseason.
Fellow freshmen Lindsay Boling and Lindsey Fox also made an impact during the preseason. Boling scored a pair of goals in the preseason, including the game winner against West Virginia. Fox set up the game-winner in both victories, adding the final goal at West Virginia to tie for the team lead in scoring.
The other co-captain is junior Monique Gjini, who had an outstanding preseason with a goal and two assists.
Sophomore Deana Waintraub started in net for the Cards in the two preseason games, and will open the season in net.
Louisville went 11-8-0 last season with a 6-5-0 mark in the BIG EAST, advancing to the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Championship.
