LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior B.J. Rosenberg went the distance Sunday, scattering eight hits and a walk, as he lead the University of Louisville to a 4-2 win over Ball State at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Ball State (7-10) staked themselves to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Brad Miller and a sacrifice fly to left off the bat of Kyle Dygert.
Louisville junior center fielder Daniel Burton bunted for a base hit to open the second, and when BSU third baseman C.J. Webb's late throw was wild, Burton made it safely to third. An RBI groundout by Jorge Castillo plated Burton making it 2-1 Ball State.
With two away in the third, Nick Haley and Chris Cates hit back-to-back singles ahead of a two-run double down the right field line by Logan Johnson that put the Cards (7-14) up 3-2.
Johnson then added an insurance run with his second double of the day, this one to the gap in left center, scoring Cates for the 4-2 lead.
After the shaky first inning, Rosenberg (2-3) faced just one over the minimum over the next six innings, retiring the side in order in the second, sixth and seventh. He struck out one, facing seven batters over the minimum for the game.
In the ninth, Rosenberg's first career complete game looked to be in jeopardy, as Ball State loaded the bases with nobody out, but Webb's liner to shallow left center was caught by Burton, and pinch-runner Nate Fields was doubled off at second. Justin Rogers then grounded out to Haley at second to end the game.
The double play was one of three turned by the Cardinals on the afternoon. The top five batters in the Cardinal order accounted for all five hits, and each of the four runs and RBI on the afternoon.
Johnson tied a career best with his two doubles, driving in three.
Ball State starter Ryan DeGeeter (1-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs, three of which were earned on five hits and four walks in seven innings. He struck out five.
Rosenberg logged career start number 33, tying him for eighth on the career list at U of L. Haley is now tied for fifth in walks (112) and alone in 11th in hits (204), four behind James McAuley on the career list.
Louisville is scheduled to head down to Bowling Green, Kentucky to face Western Kentucky on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. before returning home to open BIG EAST play against Rutgers in a three-game series that begins Friday at 6:00 p.m. ET.
