NEW YORK, N.Y. - University of Louisville goalkeeper Joanna Haig has been named to the Soccer Buzz 2006 Elite Team of the Week after posting a pair of shutouts in BIG EAST Championship play, and defender Amy Seng has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team.
Haig picked up her sixth shutout of the season, making three saves in the Cardinals' 1-0 double overtime win over Pitt on Thursday, advancing them to the quarterfinals.
The junior from Inner Grove Heights, Minnesota then made a season-high 10 saves, blanking #6 West Virginia through 110 minutes of soccer to earn a scoreless tie. The Mountaineers advanced to the semifinals when the match was decided in a shootout.
"This is a very well deserved honor for Jo," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"She has been extremely sharp in our last few games and we are all very confident in her ability to make the routine saves as well as the big save. She is truly one of the best goalkeepers in the country and she has shown that in many of our games this fall."
With her seven shutouts this season, Haig is second on the single season list at U of L, and her goals against average of 0.53 is the top number in school history.
Five of her shutouts have been in league play. She has allowed only four goals in her last 11 games and only two teams have scored against her in her last seven.
Haig becomes the second Cardinal honored by Soccer Buzz this season, after junior midfielder Monique Gjini was tabbed for the weekly honor on October 3.
Seng has a 3.95 GPA in sport administration with a minor in business administration. She has not left the field this season and has played all but 24 minutes in her career.
The senior from Centennial, Colorado, was a Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American last season after making the All-District First Team. She was a member of the All-District Third Team as a sophomore. Freshman are not eligible to be on the teams.
"Amy embodies all of the qualities that we truly respect in our student-athletes. She is a fantastic student, a wonderful leader and team captain, and fierce competitor. I have had the pleasure of coaching her for her four years and we will miss her tremendously," Ferguson added.
Voting for the CoSIDA Academic All-America teams will begin on November 7.
The Cardinals were ousted from the BIG EAST Championship Quarterfinals, falling at #6 West Virginia on kicks after playing WVA to a scoreless tie.
Louisville is 13-4-2 overall and await the selection of the field of 64 that will compete in the NCAA Championship Tournament on November 6. If the Cards were granted an at-large bid, it would be the first trip to the NCAA tournament in U of L soccer history. The tournament begins at selected campus sites on November 10.
