PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Louisville freshmen Jessica Mello and Deana Waintraub were selected as the BIG EAST women's soccer Defender and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively, after they helped the Cards to a pair of shutout victories last week.
"This is a great honor for both Jessica and Deana. They have been able to make an immediate impact on our program and we know they will continue to be solid for us as we begin our BIG EAST schedule this week at Cincinnati," U of L Head Coach Karen Ferguson noted.
Louisville (5-1-0) edged Murray State on the road 1-0 on Wednesday before overpowering Western Kentucky 5-0 Sunday.
Mello played all 90 minutes in both matches, helping a stingy Cardinal defense limit the Racers to just four shots on goal and Western to just one shot on goal.
Waintraub, who holds a 5-0-0 record, notched her third shutout of the season, making four stops against Murray. She made one save in her fourth shutout of the season in the win over WKU.
This is the first season for U of L in the BIG EAST, and the Cards will open conference play on Thursday when they travel up I-71 to face rival Cincinnati at 7:00 p.m. ET.
