LOUISVILLE, KY - Southern Miss topped the University of Louisville 6-3 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from the Cards Saturday at Jim Patterson Stadium.
Southern Miss(31-12, 13-7 C-USA) plated a pair of unearned runs in the first to take a 2-0 lead in game one.
Greg Taylor opened the Cardinal(22-18, 9-10 C-USA) half of the third with a double, and later scored on a single by J.T. LaFountain to make it 2-1 USM.
An RBI single by Kevin Coker in the USM fifth made it 3-1, but the Cards answered in the sixth to make it 3-2.
In that inning, Logan Johnson hit a one out double, and scored on an RBI single by Taylor.
RBI singles by Coker, Brad Wilcutt and Lowrey in the seventh extended the advantage to 6-2 Southern Miss.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a double-play groundout by Johnson halted the rally with just the single run scoring to close the book.
USM starter Patrick Ezell (6-2) picked up the win with 5.2 innings of work. He allowed two runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out two. Cole Basinger earned his first save of the season.
Cardinal starter B.J. Rosenberg (4-3) took the loss, scattering 12 hits over seven innings, leading to six runs, four of which were earned. He fanned three.
In game two Southern Miss again jumped out to a 2-0 lead, this time in the third on an RBI double by Coker and a sac fly by Maddox.
An RBI fielder's choice by Trey Sutton in the fourth made it 3-0.
Louisville evened the ledger in the fifth with three of their own.
Jorge Castillo blasted the first pitch of the inning over the fence in right for his second home run of the season. Taylor doubled, Chris Cates singled and an RBI groundout by Whiting scored Taylor. Nick Haley's RBI single knotted the game.
In the Southern Miss eighth, Wilcutt and Lowrey hit back-to-back doubles to push across what would be the winning run.
John Nicholas (2-0) notched the win in game two with 2.1 innings of one-hit, one-walk shutout ball. He struck out two. Daniel Best walked one and allowed a hit in the ninth to pick up his eighth save of the season.
Trystan Magnuson (3-5) suffered the loss, giving up a run on five hits, striking out one in 3.1 innings.
The teams will complete the series on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET at Jim Patterson Stadium, where admission is free.
