LOUISVILLE, KY - Boomer Whiting was 2 for 3 with two runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases, helping the University of Louisville to a 6-3 win over Murray State Wednesday.
An RBI double by Clint Griggs in the top of the first put the 'Breds(21-21) on top 1-0.
The Cards (22-16) evened the ledger in the bottom of the inning. Whiting was hit by the first pitch of the inning, and as he stole second, a pick-off attempt by Murray pitcher Jake Ociesa sailed into right field, pushing Whiting to third.
An RBI groundout by Nick Haley scored Whiting.
In the Cardinal second Jorge Castillo reached on a fielder's choice and Daniel Burton walked. A wild pitch moved them up a station, and Whiting's two-run bloop single to right center plated two for a 3-1 Cardinal lead.
Chaz Ebert singled and eventually scored on an RBI single by Griggs, cutting the lead to 3-2 Cards.
In the Louisville fifth, Chris Cates reached on an error, Whiting laid down a bunt single and Haley advanced them with a sac bunt. A wild pitch scored Cates, and after J.T. LaFountain walked he was caught in a rundown leaning off the bag at first. Whiting bluffed away from third during the rundown, and MSU shortstop Phil Lopez threw wildly to third, scoring Whiting, and making it 5-2 Louisville.
Murray got a run closer when a fielding error by Castillo allowed Brett Mullins to score from third to make it 5-3.
Cates walked and stole second to open the seventh and later scored on an RBI single by LaFountain to close the scoring.
Mike Lynn (1-1) started and earned the win for U of L, allowing two unearned runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four in 6.0 innings. Jon Harbridge tossed two innings of relief, giving up an unearned run on two hits and a walk, fanning a career-best four.
