LEXINGTON, KY - A slow roller to the left side off the bat of shortstop Ryan Wilkes plated the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th inning as Kentucky defeated the University of Louisville 4-3 on Wednesday night.
Louisville (17-12) picked up a run in the first without the benefit of a hit as Boomer Whiting walked, moved to second on a groundout by Nick Haley, stole third and scored on a sac fly by J.T. LaFountain for a 1-0 Cardinal lead.
Whiting doubled with two out in the third and scored on a single by Haley to make it 2-0 Cards.
Leading off in the third inning, Daniel Burton lifted a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left center for his second home run of the season and a 3-0 U of L advantage.
The Wildcats plated two in the fourth on RBI singles by John Shelby and JP Lowen to cut it to 3-2.
First baseman Kyle Caldwell beat out a double-play relay at first to plate a run in the fifth and tie the game at three.
In the 10th, Griffin Bailey (2-1), who was tagged with the loss, walked the first two batters of the inning. Brian Halford replaced him and a sacrifice moved the runners to second and third with one out. After an intentional walk loaded the bases, Halford struck out Justin Scutchfield for the second out, before the infield single by Wilkes ended the game.
Bailey did not record an out, allowing a run, while Halford allowed a hit and a walk, to go with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.
Mike Lynn started for the Cards and tossed 3.1 frames, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk, while fanning a season-high four.
Scott Jenkins followed, giving up a run on three hits and three walks, striking out two in 2.2 innings. Trystan Magnuson was solid in three innings, allowing a hit and striking out four.
