
Louisville Tops #1 Tulane Again

LOUISVILLE, KY - A four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth lifted the University of Louisville baseball team to a 6-4 win over #1 Tulane in game one of a split doubleheader Saturday. The Cards have taken the first two games of the series, with the night cap set for Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
Tulane(20-5, 3-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first on a three-run home run by Matt Barket, his second of the season.
Cardinal senior second baseman J.T. LaFountain launched his sixth home run of the season to right in the bottom of the first to trim the lead to 3-1.
Isaiah Howes singled to open the second and scored on an RBI double by freshman Derrick Alfonso to trim the lead to 3-2, Tulane.
Warren McFadden's RBI single through a drawn-in infield scored Micah Owings and put Tulane up 4-2.
With one out in the Cardinal (14-6, 5-0 C-USA) sixth, Nick Haley and LaFountain put runners at the corners with back-to-back singles. Jorge Castillo's RBI single scored Haley and moved LaFountain to third, and Howes doubled home another run to tie the game at four.
Daniel Burton stepped to the plate with runners at second and third and roped a double inside the third base bag, clearing the bases and putting the Cards up for good, 6-4.
Cardinal starter Skylar Meade (4-1) picked up the win with six innings of work, allowing four runs on nine hits and a walk. He fanned one.
Griffin Bailey worked two innings of one-hit relief, striking out one, and getting the ball in the hands of closer Brian Halford, who retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his third save of the season and tenth of his career. He is now alone in fifth place all-time at U of L.
Starter Brandon Gomes (3-1) took the loss for the Wave, surrendering six runs on eight hits, while striking out eight. Sean Morgan tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits to go with a strikeout.
LaFountain was 3 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. He is now 11 for 21 with two doubles and four home runs in five C-USA games.
Castillo and Howes each had two hits on the afternoon.
The forecast is calling for rain in the Ohio Valley, forcing the Cards and Wave to play the doubleheader Saturday.
