EVANSVILLE, IN - Evansville used a three-run first to lift them to a 5-2 win over the University of Louisville Wednesday night at Braun Stadium.
Boomer Whiting walked leading off the game, stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. An attempted throw to third to nab Whiting went into left, allowing him to score, and putting the Cards (9-6) up 1-0 without the benefit of a hit.
Evansville answered with three two-out runs in the bottom of the first on RBI base hits by Pat Tumilty, Dusty Knight and Robbie Minor.
Shortstop Chris Cates singled and stole second in the fifth and eventually scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Logan Johnson to cut the lead to 3-2.
An RBI double by Kyle Smith plated a run for the Aces (17-5) in the seventh and a sac fly by Minor in the eighth sealed the win.
Mike Lynn (0-1) started for the Cards and took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks in 2.2 innings. He struck out one.
Trystan Magnuson entered in the third and worked a career-high 4.1 innings out of the bullpen, allowing a run on three hits and a walk, while fanning two. Griffin Bailey tossed the final inning, allowing a run on a hit in the eighth.
Mitch Prout (2-0) overcame control problems to earn the win, lasting six innings and giving up two run-one earned, on three hits and five walks. He fanned two. Closer Mark Murray allowed a hit and struck out two in the ninth for his ninth save of the season.
The Cards were out-hit 10-7, with Cates putting forth the only multi-hit game.
Louisville will remain on the road as they travel to Cincinnati to face the Bearcats in a three-game weekend series that opens Conference USA play. First pitch Friday is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET.
