PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The University of Louisville's Monique Gjini has been named BIG EAST Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season, after setting a new Cardinal school record with eight points in a 5-1 win over Seton Hall last Friday.
Gjini, a midfielder from Edmonton, Alberta, assisted on the first two Cardinal goals before taking over in the second half with her first career hat trick.
The sophomore has seven goals and five assists on the season, mirroring her totals from her freshman campaign, in which she was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team and Soccer Buzz Great Lakes All-Region Freshman team.
The trick was the first for the Cardinals since teammate Jamie Craft scored three goals on September 14 last season at Murray State in a 5-3 win.
The previous Cardinal record for points in a single game was seven, established by Stephanie Contole, who scored three goals and added an assist in a 5-0 win over Valparaiso on September 14, 1996.
The honor is the third this year for the Cards, with freshmen Jessica Mello and Deana Waintraub earning BIG EAST women's soccer Defender and Goalkeeper of the Week respectively, on September 12.
The Cards are the number three seed in Division B and have a first round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament, as they will face Division A number two seed Marquette in Milwaukee on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
