Louisville, Ky. - The Louisville men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Ohio State Wednesday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals fall to 4-8-1 on the season while the Buckeyes improve to 7-5-1.
"Tonight we did not play with the same pride, passion and enthusiasm that has carried us all season," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "Those things were absent this morning in the walk through, in the warm-up before the game and on the field tonight. Not to take anything away from Ohio State, they are a good team and played quality soccer tonight and deserved to win this game. We let them play their game tonight and we simply failed to perform.
"I am delighted with Frank Jonke's play and he continues to carry us in the attack. Nick Rice-Sarantis continues to carry us in the midfield and Matt Neely carries us in the back. But we need more players to step up and help carry the load. I am glad that the fans didn't have to pay admission tonight because we would have had to pay them all back. Wearing the name Louisville on your jersey has to mean something, we can't play without that kind of passion."
The first half ended in a scoreless tie, but the Buckeyes held possession most of the half. Ohio State finished the first half with a 9-6 shot advantage. Cardinal keeper Steven DeGeorge finished the first half with six saves while Ray Burse, Jr. finished with two saves.
The Buckeyes' Kevin Nugent scored off a deflection in the 51st minute of play to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead. Then in the 72nd minute of play, DeGeorge dove for the ball in the box but tripped up an OSU player. Danny Irizarry made good on the penalty kick put the Buckeyes up 2-0.
Six minutes later the Cardinals were awarded a penalty kick. Frank Jonke blasted the shot past Burse in the 78th minute to get the Cards within one. Then in the 80th minute of play, Ohio State's Geoff Marsh scored off a Scott Marguglio corner kick to put the game out of reach.
Ohio State finished the game with a 16-9 shot advantage. DeGeorge finished with eight saves and Burse finished with three.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 15 as they travel to Villanova.
