
Jurich and Braun Lift Cards to 7-5 Win

LOUISVILLE, KY - A five-run eighth, highlighted by Mark Jurich's game-tying, three-run home run and Ron Braun's two-run triple, vaulted the University of Louisville to a 7-5 win over Houston in game two of their doubleheader Saturday.
The Cougars(25-26, 16-10) put up a three-spot in the first when a wild pitch scored Travis Tully from third, and Rob Johnson hit a two-run home run to right.
The Cards(23-27, 10-16) responded with a run in the bottom of the first. Jurich singled to open the frame, Chris Cates followed with a single, moving Jurich to third and Nick Haley plated Jurich with the third consecutive single of the inning, making it 3-1 UH.
Matt Farrington tripled to open the fifth and scored on a single by Thanos Papavasiliou for a 4-1 lead.
U of L picked up an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth when Haley scored from third on a passed ball, cutting the lead to 4-2.
A sac fly by Cole Bruce in the eighth made it 5-2 Cougs.
With two out in the bottom of the eighth, Danny Plasencia was hit by a pitch and Boomer Whiting walked, setting the stage for Jurich's 18th home run of the season, tying the game at five.
Cates followed Jurich's dinger with a walk, and Houston brought in closer Brandon Roznovsky.
Haley singled to right off of Roznovsky and Braun followed with a triple to center that cleared the bases, putting the Cards up 7-5.
It was Braun's team-leading fifth triple of the season.
Cardinal starter B.J. Rosenberg twirled seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and five walks, while striking out one, but did not figure into the decision.
Skylar Meade replaced Rosenberg, and lasted just a third of an inning, allowing an unearned run on a pair of walks. He struck out one.
Sophomore Griffin Bailey entered with the bases loaded in the eighth and one out, and gave up a sac fly before catcher Luis Pardo nailed Tully at third attempting to steal to end the inning.
Bailey(2-3) tossed a one-two-three ninth, striking out Nick Bott to end the game and pick up the win. He tossed an inning and two-thirds.
Kevin Roberts got the start for UH and went six innings, scattering seven hits and two walks that lead to a pair of runs, one of which was earned, while fanning eight.
Reliever Brad Lincoln(3-2) took the loss, giving up four runs on a hit and two walks in 1.2 frames, striking out two.
Jurich is now 4th all-time with 46 home runs, and seventh in RBI with 175 in his career, as he was 2 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored.
Cates was 3 for 4 with a walk and a run scored, while Haley picked up a pair of hits and scored two runs.
Houston won game one of the twin bill 12-2.
The final home game ever at Cardinal Stadium for the Cards will be Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET, and will decide the season series.
Seniors Steve Ayers, Mike Tisdale, Pardo, Braun and Jurich will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
Louisville is slated to open the 2005 season in Patterson Field.
