"It is great that our community and facilities allow us to bring a world class team like the Freedom to Louisville, so that we can showcase these athletes to the youth who aspire to achieve at their level," said Head Coach Karen Ferguson.
"This is also a fantastic chance for our athletes to train and compete against some of the best players in the world," added Ferguson.
The Freedom, 2003 Founders Cup III champions, are coached by former U.S. National Team member Jim Gabarra and headlined by Abby Wambach, who scored both Freedom goals, including the game winner in overtime in the title game.
She was recently named 2003 Chevrolet Female Athlete of the Year by US Soccer, and shared the WUSA scoring title with Mia Hamm as a member of the All-WUSA First Team. The 2002 WUSA Rookie of the Year won an NCAA Championship in 1999 with the University of Florida as a first team All- American. She was the second pick overall in the 2002 draft.
Gabarra has an extensive professional coaching resume, including a stint as player-coach of the Louisville Thunder of the AISA from 1985-1987.
The Cardinals have improved their winning percentage each of the four seasons Ferguson has been at the helm of the team, and feature 2003 C-USA Freshman of the Year Jamie Craft. Louisville was 7-9-2 last season, and did not feature a single senior on the roster.
