LEXINGTON, KY - Three Kentucky home runs and three University of Louisville errors in the first four innings, directed the Wildcats to a 9-5 win on Wednesday night at Applebee's Park. The teams each won its home games in splitting the season series at a game apiece.
Josh Bolen's team-leading sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to left with two out in the first, put the Cards (28-18) up 1-0.
Kentucky (20-28) answered with three in the first and three more in the second on six hits and three U of L errors for a 6-1 lead.
The Wildcats extended the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth on solo home runs by first baseman Mike Breyman, his second on the evening, and right fielder Brad Pickerell for an 8-1 advantage.
Bolen doubled with one out in the sixth and Mark Jurich tripled him home, giving the Cards its second run of the ballgame, cutting the lead to 8-2.
The Cats pushed across its ninth run of the game on an RBI single by Caleb Stewart in the eighth.
The Cardinal Nine posted a rally in the ninth, with singles by Ron Braun and Morgan Bojorquez followed by a long home run by J.T. LaFountain to cut the lead to 9-5, but the Cards could get no further.
Cardinal starter Zach Jackson (7-5) took the loss, lasting just an inning and allowing three runs - two earned on three hits, striking out two. Mike Eilers tossed three innings out of the pen, surrendering two earned runs on seven hits and a walk to go with a pair of strikeouts.
Jon Harbridge enjoyed his most successful stint yet as a Cardinal, striking out two in three innings of one-hit, shutout ball.
Carlos Fernandez was touched for a run on two hits, tossing the eighth.
The Cats sent six hurlers to the hill, with starter Matt Scott(1-1) earning the win, allowing a run on three hits in 3.1 frames, fanning one.
Dave Williams Jr. saw his hit streak end at 21 games on the evening with an 0 for 4 performance. Bolen and LaFountain had the only multi-hit efforts for the Cards.
Louisville will host the final three home games of the season against Tulane over the weekend, beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium, where admission and parking are free.
