LOUISVILLE, KY -An RBI fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the ninth by catcher Luis Pardo lifted the University of Louisville Cardinals to a 7-6 win over #21 Tulane in the ninth inning of game two of their doubleheader Saturday. Third baseman Ryan McKinnon had drilled a solo home run to right center in the eighth to tie the game up at six.
The Cards took a 1-0 lead without the benefit of a hit in the first when Dave Williams Jr. walked, stole third and advanced to third when the throw to the bag sailed to center field. A groundout by J.T. LaFountain plated the initial run.
Tulane (37-14, 18-8) waited until the fourth to respond, when Michael Aubrey drilled a two-run home run to the bleachers in right center, giving the Wave a 2-1 lead.
Louisville tied things up in the fifth when Williams singled and moved to second on a balk, and LaFountain plated him with a two-out single.
Tulane struck for four in the sixth on a two-run single by Wes Swackhamer, an RBI single by Nathan Southard and a run-scoring double off the bat of Brian Borman for a 6-2 Tulane lead.
A solo home run with two out in the bottom of the sixth edged the Cards closer, and with runners at the corners, Nick Haley singled home Pardo, who had followed Bojorquez with a double to make it 6-4 Wave.
LaFountain lead off the seventh with a single and scored on a triple by Mark Jurich, closing the gap to 6-5, before McKinnon's clout on the first pitch, with one out in the eighth knotted the score.
In the victorious ninth, Josh Bolen and Jurich each walked, and Ron Braun moved the runners with a groundout.
An intentional walk was issued to Bojorquez, and on a 1-0 pitch, Pardo bounced one to third. Tulane third baseman Tim Guidry moved back to the third base bag for one, but his relay was wide and late, allowing Bolen to score the game winner.
Carlos Fernandez (5-1) notched the win with 1.2 perfect innings, striking out three. Zach Jackson started for the 17th time on the season, a new Cardinal record, and tossed 7.1 solid frames, allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks, setting down five by called third strike.
Tulane reliever Brian Bogusevic (3-2) absorbed the loss, walking two in a third of an inning.
Every Cardinal starter had a base hit, with LaFountain the only batter with a pair.
The same two teams will meet on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium for the deciding game of the series and final home game of the season for the Cards. Seven players will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
