LOUISVILLE, KY - Home runs by Ron Braun and Morgan Bojorquez provided all the offense that would be needed in the University of Louisville's 7-3 win over Morehead State Wednesday night.
A two-run home run by Kevin Bryant put the Eagles (13-25) up 2-0 in the first, but the Cards (27-15) responded with three of their own in the bottom of the frame to tale a 3-2 lead.
Mark Jurich doubled home Boomer Whiting, who had walked, and Braun took a payoff pitch deep to right, his fifth of the season, for the advantage.
In the third a sac fly by catcher Matt Morris tied things up at three, but again the lead was short-lived as Braun doubled home Josh Bolen to reestablish a one-run lead.
Whiting and Bolen singled to lead off the seventh, and on a Jurich fielder's choice, the throw to first in an attempt to turn a double play was wild, scoring Whiting and making it 5-3 U of L.
Bojorquez followed with a titanic two-run home run to straightaway center field on a 2-2 pitch to close the scoring at 7-3.
Cardinal reliever Mike Eilers (4-3) notched the win with four innings of shutout ball, allowing two hits and a walk and striking out three.
Starter Zach Jackson lasted three, surrendering three runs on five hits and walk to go with two K's.
Griffin Bailey loaded the bases on a hit and two walks, pitching a third of an inning, but senior Carlos Fernandez entered and wriggled out of the jam to pick up his seventh save of the year. Fernandez allowed a hit in 1.2 frames and struck out the last batter of the game.
Aaron Crawford (1-5) started and took the loss for the Eagles, giving up four runs on seven hits and four walks in five innings. He struck out four. Three Eagle relievers each tossed a frame to wrap things up.
Williams bunted for a base hit on the first pitch of the ballgame to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games. The school record is 25 straight by Tommy Barnes(3/5-4/23/92). Williams had two hits as did Braun, Bolen and Bojorquez, with Braun driving in three runs.
Louisville will take to the road for its next four, facing the Cougars of Houston for three over the weekend beginning Friday at 8:00 p.m. ET, before facing Kentucky on Wednesday at Applebee's Field in Lexington.
