
Cardinal Nine Splits Twin Bill with 49ers

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The University of Louisville baseball team split a doubleheader with Charlotte Sunday, dropping the first game 8-3, and rebounding to win the second game 7-4.
The 49ers (16-18, 7-9) took advantage of two Cardinal errors and pounded out 12 hits behind starter Zachary Treadway to win game one of the twin bill.
In the first game, the 49ers took a 1-0 lead in the first with an unearned run on Brad Erwin's sacrifice fly.
An error and five singles lead to four runs for the 49ers in the third, upping the lead to 5-0.
In the Cardinal half of the fourth, Mark Jurich doubled to lead off the frame, and Ron Braun cranked his fourth home run of the season to put the Cards on the board, cutting the advantage to 5-2.
An RBI double by Randall Poplin in the fourth made it 6-2 Charlotte, and two more runs in the sixth again made it a five-run lead.
Braun's RBI single in the seventh scored Boomer Whiting for the final margin.
Zach Jackson (6-4) took the loss allowing five runs, two earned, on seven hits, striking out three.
Mike Eilers went 2.1 innings of relief and was touched for three runs on five hits and two walks, fanning one, while Griffin Bailey walked one in two-thirds of an inning.
Treadway (6-2) allowed three runs on four hits and four walks, while striking out four in the win, tossing 6.1 innings.
Louisville (23-13, 9-8) jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first in game two. Dave Williams Jr. reached on an error before J.T. LaFountain doubled, putting runners at second a third. A wild pitch plated Williams and an RBI single by Bolen scored LaFountain.
Braun singled home Bolen and Morgan Bojorquez doubled to left, putting runners at second a third, and chasing starter Matt Savage. Luis Pardo greeted reliever Justin Brown with a double, driving in a pair and putting the Cards up 5-0.
In the third, with two out, Pardo drew a walk, and Ryan McKinnon followed drilling an 0-1 pitch deep to left -center for his first career home run and a 7-0 Cardinal lead.
The 49ers battled back for three run in the third on four hits to cut the lead to 7-3.
A solo home run by Thomas Bowker trimmed the lead down to 7-4 in the fifth, but Carlos Fernandez shut the door, picking up a save and preserving the win for starter Scott Barber (7-2).
Barber went 5.1 frames, surrendering four runs on eight hits and a walk. He struck out four, and is now tied for ninth all time on the U of L single season win list with seven victories.
Fernandez notched his fifth save of the season, tying him for fifth on the single season list and ninth of his career, tying him four fourth. He gave up a hit and fanned one in 1.2 innings.
Savage (3-4) retired just a single out giving up five runs, four earned on four hits in the loss.
Braun was 6 for 8 in the twin bill with four RBI, cracking thee singles in the night cap to lead the Cards. Williams singled in each game to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 12 games.
Louisville will host Kentucky Tuesday night at Slugger Field in the Battle of the Bluegrass. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. ET.
