
Cardinal Nine Blanked by Bulls

KINSTON, N.C. - For the first time in the 2002 season, the University of Louisville baseball team was shut out, losing its opener of the Conference USA tournament 10-0 to South Florida.
The Cards (39-15) fall into the losers bracket and will face the loser of the Wednesday night match up between TCU and East Carolina at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday in an elimination game.
The Bulls (32-25) took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by center fielder Mike Barclay.
In the fourth, Barclay lead off with his seventh triple of the season and later scored on an error to give the Bulls a 2-0 advantage.
South Florida exploded for six runs in the fifth. The Bulls knocked seven consecutive singles to open the inning plating four runs. Third baseman Jeff Baisley plated a run and Barclay drove in two. Ronnie Handley and Mike Cunningham also drove in runs in the inning, increasing the lead to 8-0.
Cunningham scored on an error in the eighth and a sacrifice fly by Baisley closed the book, ending the game after eight on the ten-run rule, 10-0.
U of L went down in order in five of the eight innings and managed only three base hits. Just two baserunners reached second.
Bulls starter Jon Uhl (9-4) tossed seven scoreless, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out six in the win. Steve Palinkas fanned two in a 1-2-3 eighth.
Cardinal starter Zach Jackson (10-2) took the loss, and was gouged for eight runs on 10 hits and a walk, while striking out three in four innings.
Carlos Fernandez allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in the final four frames of relief.
Mike Budak and Josh Bolen singled while Carlos De la Osa doubled for the Cards.
