KINSTON, N.C. - The University of Louisville baseball team was eliminated from the 2002 Conference USA Tournament Thursday after an 8-1 loss to TCU.
The Horned Frogs(30-28) loaded the bases on a pair of Cardinal errors and a bunt single in the fifth with no outs. Left fielder Chris Meeks singled home a pair and right fielder Terry Trofholz plated two more with a single for a 4-0 lead.
The Cards(39-16) scored its first and only run of the tournament when Carlos De la Osa raked his fifth home run of the season over the fence in right, trimming the lead to 4-1 after five.
TCU second baseman Will Lewis got the run back when he doubled home a run in the sixth for a 5-1 advantage.
An RBI double by Meeks, a sac fly by third baseman Jared Lundeen and an RBI single by first baseman Walter Olmstead tacked on the final three runs of the game in the ninth, making it 8-1.
TCU starter Chris Osentowski (2-2) shut down the Cards, giving up just a single run on five hits and a walk, going the distance and fanning seven.
Louisville starter Scott Barber (4-5) took the loss, allowing five runs, three of which were earned on nine hits in six innings. Barber struck out four.
Josh Ring twirled the final three frames, giving up three run on three hits and a walk, to go with two strikeouts.
Louisville now awaits an at-large regional bid as one of the 64 teams in the NCAA tournament. The sites and teams will be selected and announced on ESPN2 Monday May 27th at 12:30 p.m. ET. If U of L is selected, it would mark the first time in school history the Cardinals have participated in the postseason.
