TAMPA, FL - A seven run seventh inning vaulted South Florida to a 10-7 win over Louisville in baseball action Saturday at Red McEwen Field.
The Cards fall to 17-6 overall and 6-2 in Conference USA with the loss. Louisville will try to avoid the sweep on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in a game that is available via satellite at AMC 5, transponder 13 on Fox Sports Net Florida.
South Florida struck for three runs in the third on a sacrifice fly by shortstop Myron Leslie and a two-run single off the bat of center fielder Mike Barclay.
Louisville evened the score on an RBI single by catcher Ken Tirpack in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth on an RBI groundout by Mark Jurich and a sac fly by Morgan Bojorquez.
The game remained tied into the seventh when Jurich hit a one-out single and Morgan Bojorquez blasted a two-run home run to left field, giving the Cards its first lead on the afternoon 5-3.
In the bottom of the inning, USF loaded the bases for left fielder Mike Cunningham who hit a comebacker to pitcher Josh Ring. Ring fired to the plate for what looked to be an inning-ending double play, but the throw was wild, allowing two runs to score.
Second baseman Mike Macaluso followed with a two-run single, Leslie doubled home a run and Barclay sealed the fateful inning with a two-run home run to left, ending the misery with a 10-5 lead.
U of L managed two more in the ninth on an RBI double by J.T. LaFountain and an RBI single by Jurich, but the rally ended there 10-7.
Ring was the losing pitcher having allowed seven runs, four of which were earned, on five hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.
Cardinal starter Zach Jackson was solid again, surrendering three runs on six hits and two walks to go with five K's in 6.1 frames. Grant Williams gave up a hit and a walk in a third of an inning, striking out one.
USF starter Jason Bartz gave up five runs on nine hits and struck out four. Keith Strickland(4-0) was touched for two runs on three hits in an inning of work for the win.
Joey Livingston recorded the final out for his second save of the season and in as many games.
LaFountain, Jurich, Tirpack and Fernando Isa each had two hits for Louisville.
Sunday's game will feature Carlos Fernandez (2-0, 2.81) for Louisville against USF's Ryan Gloger(2-1, 5.30).
