TAMPA, FL - South Florida completed a three-game sweep over Louisville with a 7-2 win on Sunday in Tampa. Both teams are part of a five-way tie for second place in Conference USA with 6-3 records, Louisville falls to 17-6 overall while USF is now 17-11.
South Florida took a 3-0 lead in the second RBI singles by catcher Devin Ivany and third baseman Jeff Baisley and a sacrifice fly by shortstop Myron Leslie.
Louisville got on the board in the fourth when Mark Jurich plated Adam Haley on a ground out that was mishandled by Leslie.
South Florida had an answer for the Cards with two more runs in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back RBI singles by second baseman Mike Macaluso and Leslie to increase the lead to 5-1.
Another RBI single by Ivany in the fifth extended the lead to 6-1 and an unearned run in the sixth made it 7-1 Bulls.
An RBI groundout by Cardinal center fielder Dave Williams Jr. clinched the final margin.
USF starter Ryan Gloger(3-1) was the winner, limiting the Cards to one earned run on five hits and three walks in seven innings of work. David Austen and Joey Livingston each tossed a perfect inning in relief.
Cardinal starter Carlos Fernandez (2-1) took the loss surrendering five runs on seven hits and two walks in 3.1 innings. Fernandez had one strikeout.
Clif Novak threw 2.1 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits and three walks while striking out two. Willie McKenzie gave up a hit and two walks to go with one strikeout in the final 2.1 innings.
Designated hitter Ken Tirpack had two of the five Cardinal hits against Gloger. Tirpack and Gloger were teammates at Stanford last season.
Next up for the Cards is a trip to Charleston, West Virginia for a single game against West Virginia on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:00 p.m. The Cards will then host Cincinnati for a three-game weekend set against the Bearcats beginning Friday.
