Late Rally Boosts USC to Win Over Cardinal Baseball
February 04, 2001 | Baseball
USC's Bill Peavey hit a two-run double in the eighth Sunday for the go-ahead runs as part of a seven-run inning and the No. 2 USC Trojans defeated the Louisville Cardinals, 11-4, at Dedeaux Field in non-conference action. Peavey hit a 2-2 pitch off reliever Antonio Castellvi(Plant HS/Tampa, FL) into right center for the game-winning hit.
Louisville (0-2) opened the scoring with a run in the first on a sacrifice fly by freshman first baseman Carlos De la Osa(Pace HS/Miami, FL). USC (3-0) answered with two runs in the second on four singles.
The Cardinals tied the game in the sixth when designated hitter Scott Gerlach(Mesa CC/Tempe, AZ) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two outs against the Trojans' starter Rik Currier. Currier got freshman right fielder Mark Jurich(Ballard HS/Louisville, KY) to ground out to first, ending the threat.
With two runs in the bottom of the sixth on a bases-loaded single by Brian Barre, the Trojans took a 4-2 lead and brought in righthander Chad Clark. Clark gave up two runs to Louisville on a two-run double down the right field line by center fielder Mike Hook(Markham, ONT/Notre Dame HS) who was 3-for-9 with three RBI in the two game set. With runners at second and third, Clark (1-0) recorded two straight outs to again end the Cardinals' threat.
The Trojans' eighth started when a bunt by Josh Persell was overthrown by Louisville reliever Josh Ring (0-1) for a two-base error. Second baseman Anthony Lunetta was hit by a pitch and Alberto Concepcion struck out before Castellvi entered the game. Lunetta went 3-for-3 for the game while freshman third baseman Michael Moon went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
"I think Louisville showed a lot of guts after yesterday's game," said Gillespie. "For them to come out and compete like they did I think was impressive. All in all, I think it was a pretty good college baseball game."
Junior catcher Fernando Isa(Chipola JC/Los Prados, D.R.) was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring once, while sophomore shortstop Adam Haley(Pleasure Ridge Park HS/Louisville, KY) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Cards continue the eight game road trip at Cal-State Northridge(6-2) February 5th at 5:30.
