Louisville beat Boston by a 3-0 margin but fell to host South Carolina 9-1.
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of Louisville softball team went 1-1 on the first day of the Carolina Classic, grabbing a 3-0 win over Boston University but falling 9-1 to No. 16-ranked South Carolina.Â
Alyssa Zabala pitched a complete game shutout against BU, allowing just three hits and one walk while fanning six batters. Bri Despines led the game with two RBI, and Chelsea Mack, Madison Pickens and Jordan Williams all crossed home for UofL.
After a one out single and a stolen base from Mack, Despines knocked an RBI single to score Mack and get the Cards on the board in the top of the first.Â
An error by the Terriers allowed Pickens to reach second from the leadoff spot, and a double from Despines brought her home to stretch Louisville's lead to two in the top of the sixth.
Jordan Williams started off the seventh with a one-out triple down the right field line. Lotus dropped a bunt single to score Williams and stole second on a failed pickoff. Zabala stranded a runner and posted another zero on the board in the home half of the inning to complete the shutout and advance to 2-0 on the season.Â
Despines kept the RBI parade going in the second matchup of the day with the ranked Gamecocks. Lotus knocked a leadoff single to start the game, and Despines drove her in with a double to put UofL up 1-0 in the first inning. Lotus and Camryn Lookadoo would add doubles of their own to the Cards' hit total, but Louisville came up short in five innings.
Anna Wise fell to 0-2 in the circle after allowing four earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched.Â
UofL will be back in action tomorrow morning, facing Kennesaw State at 10 a.m. ET before moving onto a rematch with Boston University at 12:30 p.m. ET.
