The Cards finish the weekend 3-1 before heading into their home opener on Tuesday.
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of Louisville softball team swept the final day of the Carolina Classic, taking a 4-0 win over Kennesaw State and a 5-3 win over Boston University on Saturday afternoon.
Pitchers Madi Reeves and Anna Wise each grabbed their first win of the season, with Reeves pitching the shutout against the Owls. Bri Despines finished the day with two RBIs, one hit and one run. Riley Janda launched her second home run of the year in the game against KSU, and six different Cardinals logged hits versus BU.Â
Against Kennesaw State, Janda walked and Thatcher reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on with no outs in the bottom of the second. After a foul out, Williams walked to load the bases, and Lotus grounded into a fielder's choice that erased Thatcher and scored Janda. Another walk to Mack reloaded the bases, and Pickens was hit by a pitch to plate Williams. Despines drew a walk to bring home Lotus and score the final run of the inning.
Janda led off the home half of the fifth inning with her second home run of the year, this time a solo shot to left field. Reeves continued to pitch lights out softball, finishing the game with four strikeouts and just seven hits allowed with under 90 pitches thrown.Â
In the second matchup of the weekend with BU, Madison Pickens laced a triple to score Easton Lotus in the bottom of the first. Wise relieved Jayden Gohs in the top of the third as both pitchers combined for another scoreless inning.
The home frame of the fourth inning saw Louisville score four runs on three hits and steal five bases off of the Terriers. Pickens, Despines, Camryn Lookadoo, and Katie Thatcher each tallied an RBI with Lookadoo going 2-for-3 against Boston. Alyssa Zabala recorded the save after pitching to two batters in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
The Cards return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 17 for their home opener. UofL will face cross-town rival Bellarmine at 6:30 p.m. at Ulmer Stadium.Â
