Emersen Jennings scored the game’s only goal in the 82nd minute
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's soccer team (8-2-0, 1-1-0 ACC) were on the right side of a thrilling 1-0 win over Virginia Tech (4-4-2, 0-2-0 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The Cardinals got a late goal in the 82nd minute from Emersen Jennings to propel them to the win. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-0 at home and pick up their first ACC win of the season.
Jennings' goal was her third of the season and she has tallied a point in six of the seven home games this season. Liza Suydam had her fifth assist of the season on the goal and she has tallied at least one point in all seven home games this year. The Louisville defense earned its fifth-straight clean sheet at home and seventh overall on the season. Erynn Floyd has started in all seven clean sheets and she had two saves against the Hokies.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half. Most of the play occurred in the midfield as neither team was able to put together dangerous chances in the attacking third.
Virginia Tech had the best chance between the two teams in the 18th minute off of a corner kick. The service got to the far post and the Hokies were able to get a shot on net. It was saved off the line by Lizzie Sexton and cleared away.
In the second half, the Cardinals had the first chance to break the deadlock. In the 59th minute, the Cards strung together passes in the attacking third and Mackenzie Geigle was on the receiving end in the middle of the box. She sent a shot on goal but it was saved and deflected out of play by the Hokies keeper.
The Cardinals continued to push forward as they had another opportunity in the 66th minute. Karina Peat had the ball on the edge of the box and cut back to get separation from her defender. She sent a low, driven shot across the box but it went clear of the far post and out of play.
Louisville broke through in the 82nd minute as Suydam started the play at midfield. She played into the open space in the attacking third and sent a through ball to Jennings, who was getting behind the Hokies defense. Jennings was 1-v-1 with the keeper and fired a shot past her for the game-winning goal.
Louisville remains at home as it is in the middle of a three-game homestand over the next few weeks. Next, the Cardinals host Clemson on Friday, September 19 at Lynn Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
