July 14, 2025 | Baseball
Jake Munroe, Matt Klein, Tucker Biven, Eddie King Jr. and Justin West were selected on Monday.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville baseball program had five student-athletes selected on Monday during day two of the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft.
Jake Munroe (Round 4, Pick 109, Los Angels Angels), Matt Klein (Round 6, Pick 167, Colorado Rockies), Tucker Biven (Round 13, Pick 381, Washington Nationals), Eddie King Jr. (Round 16, Pick 473, Pittsburgh Pirates) and Justin West (Round 18, Pick 554, New York Yankees) all heard their names called on Monday.
The group joins Patrick Forbes in Louisville's 2025 draft class after Forbes was taken with the 29th overall pick on Sunday night.
Louisville has now had 111 players selected in the MLB Draft during Dan McDonnell's tenure as head coach. The six total selections are the most for the Cards since having seven in 2021. Louisville has now had six or more players drafted in 11 of McDonnell's 19 seasons.
Munroe transferred to Louisville from John A. Logan and made an immediate impact in the middle of the lineup. The junior was one of two players to start all 66 games this spring, hitting .346 with 13 doubles, 13 home runs and 61 RBIs. Munroe was one of three Cardinals named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team and was excellent throughout Louisville's postseason run. The third baseman hit .378 during the NCAA Tournament with a team-leading four homers.
Klein has worn a Louisville uniform for the last three seasons. The hometown product was a captain and the starting catcher for the Cardinals this spring and got off to a strong start with a .342 average through the first 21 games. However, Klein was hit by a pitch on the wrist in late March and missed the remainder of the regular season. The junior returned for the postseason and homered in each of his first two starts back against East Tennessee State and Vanderbilt in the NCAA Nashville Regional. Klein finished his junior season with a .310 average, five homers and 31 RBIs in 33 games.
Like Klein, Biven stayed home and played three seasons with the Cardinals. The New Albany High School product made 63 career appearances on the mound during his career, pitching in a variety of roles. Biven worked as Louisville's closer in 2024 and the majority of 2025 before transitioning into the weekend rotation late in the spring. The junior was outstanding during Louisville's postseason march, making four appearances with a 2-0 record and a 1.35 ERA over 13.1 innings. Biven tallied both of his postseason wins in the College World Series, tossing five shutout innings against Arizona and Oregon State.
King was the lone four-year senior on the 2025 roster for the Cardinals, and he saved his best season for his last. The outfielder got off to a slow start this spring with an early-season injury sidelining him for nearly a month. However, King came back with a vengeance and was among the best hitters in all of the country. The senior led the Cards with a .367 average, 19 doubles and 63 RBIs and was second on the team with 17 home runs. King was at his best in the postseason though, hitting .500 (18-for-36) with five doubles, three homers and 11 RBIs in 10 games. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the NCAA Nashville Regional and then earned a spot on the College World Series All-Tournament Team.
West finished up his junior season with the Cardinals this spring. The southpaw had an up-and-down first half but was dominant in the second half of the year. Over his final 13 appearances, West allowed just three earned runs over 22 innings (1.23 ERA) with 26 strikeouts. That stretch included a lights out postseason out of the bullpen, when he surrendered just one run over 9.2 innings for a team-best 0.93 ERA. West made 38 appearances over his three seasons, posting a 4-3 record and striking out 76 in 54.2 innings of work.
Louisville put together a 42-24 overall record in 2025, reaching the College World Series for the sixth time in program history.
