Cardinals Lose Opening Game to Wake Forest
May 15, 2025 | Baseball
Louisville lost 14-4 on Thursday night.
Louisville (34-19, 14-14 ACC) has now lost a season-high four consecutive games.
Wake Forest (35-18, 15-13) jumped out in front on Thursday with a solo home run from the second batter of the game. The Demon Deacons then stretched the margin to three with a two-run homer in the second.
The Cardinals responded with four unanswered runs over the next three frames.
Tague Davis got the Cards on the board with a two-run opposite field home run in the bottom half of the second. The homer was the 17th of the season for the freshman, adding to his Louisville freshman record.
Alex Alicea singled to lead off Louisville's half of the third and would later come home on a wild pitch to tie the game at three apiece. Eddie King Jr. then led off the fourth with a towering home run inside the left field foul pole to put the Cardinals in front for the first time.
The game held at 4-3 through six innings on the back of Ethan Eberle. The freshman southpaw worked a career-best six innings and set a new career mark with nine strikeouts.
After allowing the two home runs in the first two innings, Eberle put four consecutive zeros on the board and exited the game with a 4-3 lead.
Wake Forest capitalized on the Louisville bullpen though, taking the lead in the seventh with a two-out, two-run homer.
Louisville threatened to tie the game or even take the lead back in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. However, a strikeout and groundball left the three runners on base and ended the rally.
Wake Forest then unloaded in the ninth for nine runs to reach the final margin.
Alicea and King had the only multi-hit games on the night for the Cardinals. Davis drove in two of the four runs.
Louisville and Wake Forest will continue the regular season-ending series on Friday. First pitch has been moved up to 1 p.m. ET with inclement weather in the forecast for Friday evening.
